This is a hand-painted tile mural in a wall niche at Horseshoe Wharf on Clink Street, depicting the rose window of the Great Hall at Winchester Palace, opposite the actual ruins of Winchester Palace.
The artwork was hand-painted on site in 2007 by Jonathan Waights, a British artist and master painter specialising in traditional earthenware and ceramic murals. He is the driving force behind the studio Art On Tiles.
The image is an exact, enlarged reproduction of a 19th-century architectural etching from 1884 discovered in the archives of the Guildhall Library of the City of London by Cecilia Palmer, a resident of the apartment block on which the tile mural is situated.
The tile panel was unveiled in May 2007.
