Through young eyes

Artwork created for Inspire Festival 2026.

Inspire: "This monumental piece, measuring 10 metres wide by 3 metres high, is created entirely from sewing thread stretched between hundreds of anchor points.

Composed of thousands of carefully placed lines, the portrait reveals the eyes of a child, a symbol of curiosity, imagination, and discovery. Inspired by its location near a school, the work invites viewers to reconnect with a sense of wonder and to see familiar surroundings from a fresh perspective.

From a distance, the image appears almost photographic. Up close, it dissolves into a complex network of intersecting threads, where each individual line contributes to tone depth, and detail.

The artwork shifts depending on how it is viewed. As you step back, clarity emerges. Through a camera lens, the image often appears even sharper, as the overlapping threads blend into a cohesive whole.

Made from approximately 11,000 individual lines, stretching an estimated 55 kilometres in total, this piece explores the relationship between complexity and perception. What first appears chaotic gradually becomes something deeply human and recognisable.

Balancing art, precision, and innovation, the work sits between drawing, sculpture, and installation - transforming a simple material into a powerful visual experience."
