Street Art Cities

In May 2024, two unique murals were unveiled in Breda and Tilburg in honor of the Special Olympics National Games 2024. These murals, designed by mentally challenged artists, can be admired at Sporthal Bress in Breda and at care facility Amarant in Tilburg. The artworks serve as a lasting reminder of the largest multi-sport event for people with intellectual disabilities in the Netherlands.

The mural in Tilburg is the work of Remco Roggeveen (last picture) and was applied to the wall by Erik Veldmeijer. Remco, who himself participated in the Special Olympics as a field hockey player, was able to combine his personal experience and creative talent in this special work of art. His use of colored pencil and his astute color sensitivity are beautifully expressed in the mural at care facility Amarant.

The choice of location for the mural in Tilburg was carefully considered. Amarant, an institution dedicated to caring for people who are mentally challenged, provides the perfect spot for this colorful ode to inclusive sporting events. During the May 2024 unveiling, Special Olympics ambassadors along with aldermen completed the final piece of the mural, creating a symbolic connection between the artists and the community.

Alderman Maarten van Asten (Sports) underlined the importance of the murals during the ceremony. He spoke of the honor of hosting the Special Olympics National Games and emphasized that these paintings symbolize Tilburg's inclusive values.

The Special Olympics National Games took place from June 14-16, 2024. Various sports such as beach volleyball, handball and cycling were practiced in Tilburg.
The wall was organized by Gemeente Tilburg, Stichting Amarant in cooperation with Blind Walls Gallery.

Erik Veldmeijer, the artist who realized Remco Roggeveen's mural, developed a passion for drawing at an early age. When he moved to Tilburg at the age of nineteen, he got inspired by the graffiti scene and began creating large murals. In addition to his work in public spaces, Veldmeijer is also active on canvas. His involvement in Tilburg's art community makes him a key figure in the city's thriving cultural scene.

In mei 2024 werden in Breda en Tilburg twee unieke muurschilderingen onthuld ter ere van de Special Olympics Nationale Spelen 2024. Deze muurschilderingen, ontworpen door kunstenaars met een verstandelijke beperking, zijn te bewonderen in Sporthal Bress in Breda en in zorginstelling Amarant in Tilburg. De kunstwerken dienen als blijvende herinnering aan het grootste multisportevenement voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking in Nederland.

De muurschildering in Tilburg is het werk van Remco Roggeveen (laatste foto) en is door Erik Veldmeijer op de muur aangebracht. Remco, die zelf als hockeyspeler heeft deelgenomen aan de Special Olympics, heeft in dit bijzondere kunstwerk zijn persoonlijke ervaring en creatieve talent kunnen combineren. Zijn gebruik van kleurpotlood en zijn scherpzinnige kleurgevoeligheid komen prachtig tot uiting in de muurschildering bij zorginstelling Amarant.

De locatie voor de muurschildering in Tilburg is zorgvuldig gekozen. Amarant, een instelling die zich inzet voor de zorg voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, biedt de perfecte plek voor deze kleurrijke ode aan inclusieve sportevenementen. Tijdens de onthulling in mei 2024 hebben ambassadeurs van Special Olympics samen met wethouders het laatste stuk van de muurschildering voltooid, waardoor een symbolische band tussen de kunstenaars en de gemeenschap is ontstaan.

Wethouder Maarten van Asten (Sport) onderstreepte tijdens de ceremonie het belang van de muurschilderingen. Hij sprak over de eer om gastheer te zijn van de Special Olympics National Games en benadrukte dat deze schilderingen symbool staan voor de inclusieve waarden van Tilburg.
De Special Olympics National Games vonden plaats van 14 tot en met 16 juni 2024. In Tilburg werden verschillende sporten beoefend, zoals beachvolleybal, handbal en wielrennen.

De muur werd georganiseerd door de Gemeente Tilburg en Stichting Amarant, in samenwerking met Blind Walls Gallery.

Erik Veldmeijer, de kunstenaar die de muurschildering van Remco Roggeveen realiseerde, ontwikkelde al op jonge leeftijd een passie voor tekenen. Toen hij op negentienjarige leeftijd naar Tilburg verhuisde, raakte hij geïnspireerd door de graffitiscene en begon hij grote muurschilderingen te maken. Naast zijn werk in de openbare ruimte is Veldmeijer ook actief op canvas. Door zijn betrokkenheid bij de kunstgemeenschap van Tilburg is hij een sleutelfiguur in de bloeiende culturele scene van de stad.
