Deze muurschildering van Tom Herck aan het treinstation van Sint-Truiden is een eerbetoon aan de geschiedenis, identiteit en toekomst van de stad.

Het werk is ongeveer 15 bij 15 meter groot en combineert verschillende symbolen die belangrijk zijn voor Sint-Truiden. Sint-Trudo verwijst naar de religieuze oorsprong van de stad. Het logo van STVV beklemtoont het belang van de lokale voetbalploeg als onderdeel van de lokale identiteit. Het vliegtuigje roept herinneringen op aan het voormalige vliegveld in Brustem. De dame van lichte zeden is dan weer een knipoog naar het vroegere uitgaans- en prostitutieverleden van de stationsbuurt en de huidige Chaussée d'Amour.

De mural roept bewust discussie op: ze toont niet alleen de mooie kanten van Sint-Truiden, maar ook historische en maatschappelijke elementen die minder vanzelfsprekend zijn. Dit past bij Hercks oeuvre, waarin hij vaak thema's als geschiedenis, identiteit en de manier waarop samenlevingen omgaan met hun verleden onderzoekt.

Voor het ontwerp maakte Herck gebruik van AI-gegenereerde beeldschetsen als hulpmiddel tijdens het creatieve proces. De uiteindelijke compositie en artistieke uitwerking zijn van zijn hand.

De mural bevindt zich aan het perron en is dus zichtbaar voor alle reizigers die met de trein langs het station van Sint Truiden passeren.

This mural by Tom Herck at Sint-Truiden railway station pays tribute to the city’s history, identity and future.

The work measures approximately 15 by 15 metres and combines various symbols that are significant to Sint-Truiden. Sint-Trudo refers to the city’s religious origins. The STVV logo emphasises the importance of the local football team as part of the local identity. The little aeroplane brings back memories of the former airport in Brustem. The woman of easy virtue, meanwhile, is a nod to the former nightlife and prostitution history of the station neighbourhood and the present-day Chaussée d’Amour.

The mural deliberately provokes discussion: it shows not only the beautiful aspects of Sint-Truiden, but also historical and social elements that are less obvious. This is in keeping with Herck’s body of work, in which he often explores themes such as history, identity and the way societies deal with their past.

For the design, Herck used AI-generated image sketches as a tool during the creative process. The final composition and artistic execution are his own work.

The mural is located on the platform and is therefore visible to all passengers travelling by train past Sint-Truiden station.
