Here’s a comment from the artist’s Instagram profile:
After the Second World War, our leaders decided to standardize agriculture. To achieve this, they imposed the GNIS in 1941. From small market gardeners to multinational corporations, everyone had to plant seeds listed in this catalog or face fines and deterrent lawsuits. With the snap of a finger, 90% of the varieties traditionally used by farmers simply disappeared from our plates.
Pesticides then entered the dance and went on to disrupt the fate of humanity. To make them indispensable, after deciding which seeds could be planted, the next step was to patent life itself. The seed industry therefore created “F1 hybrid” varieties — laboratory seeds that would all be the same size, grow at the same time, and produce the same number of fruits and vegetables. These higher-performance seeds transformed agriculture. Our small plots of farmland then became vast fields that no longer fed local communities, but the world.
The other side of the coin is far less appealing. These famous seeds require much more water and chemicals, and they strip our fruits and vegetables of their nutritional value. This explosive cocktail destroys everything in its path: groundwater, insects, bacteria, rivers, and soils. From now on, we no longer feed the soil, but the plant, and already 80% of insects have been wiped out in 30 years. With the eradication of insects, the entire food chain that depends on them faces the same fate — from birds to amphibians, from foxes to mammals.
So what can we do to stop the massacre? One simple action: eat less meat, because 71% of European agricultural land is used directly or indirectly to feed animals that will end up on our plates. We can also talk about it, put pressure on our elected officials, and stay informed, because another kind of agriculture is possible — one that protects the planet while providing us with quality food.
