A special street art work was created at the lock in Heumen by the artist duo Moris (Maurice Broekhoff) and Dosa (Sander Dolstra). The work of art is a tribute to the historical events that took place here during the Second World War.

The mural features an image of the old bascule bridge that once stood next to the lock. The image is designed as if it were printed on photo paper and attached to the wall with drawing pins. This choice of style gives the impression of a temporary memory, as if the past is briefly presenting itself, fleeting but important. It is a reminder of how the bridge was once part of the landscape, but has since disappeared.

The lock at Heumen played an important role during the Second World War. In 1940, it was captured by the German army as part of the invasion of the Netherlands. Four years later, in September 1944, the lock became the scene of fighting between German troops and American paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden. Eventually, the Allies managed to capture the lock, securing a strategically important passage.

A striking detail in the mural is the depiction of bullet holes. These refer to the real bullet holes that were once visible in the walls of the lock building. Over the years, these were accidentally bricked up during renovations. The artists have chosen to symbolically bring back these 'scars' in their work. In this way, they recreated the traces of the violence of war.

Bij de sluis in Heumen is een bijzonder straatkunstwerk gemaakt door het kunstenaarsduo Moris (Maurice Broekhoff) en Dosa (Sander Dolstra). Het kunstwerk is een eerbetoon aan de historische gebeurtenissen die hier tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog hebben plaatsgevonden.

De muurschildering toont een afbeelding van de oude basculebrug die ooit naast de sluis stond. De afbeelding is ontworpen alsof deze op fotopapier is afgedrukt en met punaises aan de muur is bevestigd. Deze stijlkeuze wekt de indruk van een tijdelijke herinnering, alsof het verleden zich even laat zien, vluchtig maar belangrijk. Het herinnert ons eraan dat de brug ooit deel uitmaakte van het landschap, maar inmiddels verdwenen is.

De sluis bij Heumen speelde een belangrijke rol tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In 1940 werd deze door het Duitse leger veroverd als onderdeel van de invasie van Nederland. Vier jaar later, in september 1944, werd de sluis het toneel van gevechten tussen Duitse troepen en Amerikaanse parachutisten van de 82nd Airborne Division tijdens Operatie Market Garden. Uiteindelijk slaagden de geallieerden erin de sluis te veroveren, waarmee ze een strategisch belangrijke doorgang veiligstelden.

Een opvallend detail in de muurschildering is de afbeelding van kogelgaten. Deze verwijzen naar de echte kogelgaten die ooit zichtbaar waren in de muren van het sluisgebouw. In de loop der jaren zijn deze tijdens renovaties per ongeluk dichtgemetseld. De kunstenaars hebben ervoor gekozen om deze ‘littekens’ symbolisch terug te brengen in hun werk. Op deze manier hebben ze de sporen van het oorlogsgeweld opnieuw tot leven gebracht.
