Reflecting on the theme of this season's @sakhaartru public art program, it seemed to me that the story of A.P. Chekhov's journey to Sakhalin Island unites a large number of meanings that could be embedded in the theme "Coordinate System."
Starting with the fact that the writer had to go a long way, so to speak, to radically change his position in the coordinate system of the globe.
Chekhov set out on his journey dressed as an intellectual, but the Siberian impassability quickly transformed him into a “typical Russian wanderer.”
In his letters, he humorously described wearing bast shoes given to him by peasants because his boots had fallen apart, and sleeping side by side with coachmen at inns. His clothes were covered in a layer of dust, making him look like a vagabond. In one letter, he joked, "I'm so tanned and shabby that I could be displayed in a museum as a savage."
