Description

Above the entrance to the Maastoren block of flats at Schiedamsedijk 198 is a ceramic openwork relief by Frans Tuinstra, dating from 1956.

An openwork relief is a relief in which the background is not solid against a wall, but daylight is visible through the work.

The artwork consists of stylised symbols representing the Port of Rotterdam, such as fish, dockworkers, water, boats and cranes. The artist, Frans Tuinstra (1923–2006), was a renowned ceramist and sculptor. In the year he created this work, he began working as an independent artist. His work is characterised by rough, geometric, neo-Cubist forms.
