Diving Horse

The “Diving Horse” mural, unveiled on Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City, is a vibrant tribute to the city’s rich and often overlooked history. Spearheaded by Create 48, a nonprofit founded by Zach Katzen in 2020, the mural is part of the Historical Mural Project, which aims to preserve and celebrate Atlantic City’s cultural legacy through public art. Katzen, who previously worked with the Atlantic City Arts Foundation, continued his mission to promote public art after the foundation closed during the pandemic.

The mural was painted by Humble, a New York–based artist known for forging emotional connections with the places he works. Inspired by Atlantic City’s resilient spirit and personal memories of visiting with his mother, Humble spent time absorbing the city’s energy before beginning the project. He described the mural’s theme as “taking a leap,” reflecting both the city’s iconic diving horse attraction and its enduring community strength.

Completed in just over a week, the mural’s creation involved navigating logistical challenges, including permits and planning. However, with support from Create 48 and enthusiastic locals, the process was smooth and deeply rewarding. Community engagement played a vital role, with residents sharing stories and watching the mural come to life, fostering a sense of ownership and pride.
