Sparkling Hope, KEIKYU (煌めく希望、KEIKYU) is a monumental ceramic relief public artwork designed and supervised by acclaimed Japanese painter Koji Kinutani and produced by the artisans of Creare Atami-Yugawara Studio. Measuring 2.0 meters high by 7.5 meters wide, the piece serves as a welcoming cultural landmark for international travelers arriving in Japan. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Koji Kinutani (b. 1943) is one of Japan's leading contemporary Western-style painters (yōga) and a master of classical fresco painting (affresco). Awarded Japan's prestigious Order of Culture, he is celebrated for his vibrant color palettes, energetic compositions, and dynamic fusion of Western fresco methods with Japanese motifs. ABOUT THE PIECE: Greeting commuters along the Keikyu railway line, the relief depicts a brilliant, asymmetrical rising sun spreading across Mount Fuji, Tokyo Bay, and the yacht-dotted coast of Hayama. Passenger jets take flight above Haneda Airport while a signature red Keikyu train rushes past blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms and the historic Kawasaki Daishi temple. The piece was realized using around 70 distinct glaze formulations subjected to multiple controlled firings. Traditional Japanese glazes are embedded throughout the work—including mottled Namako glaze on the central aircraft tail, green Oribe glaze across the sea and mountains, and ancient ash glaze (Hai-yu) on the temple architecture. LOCATION NOTE: Located at Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station on the Keikyu Airport Line (Tokyo, Japan).
