Federation Sydney 1901

A photograph taken near this location looking south-east towards the Lands Department in Bridge Street, which still stands today.

In the early decades of the 20th century, the State Government was actively removing housing from The Rocks. Soon after this image was taken, the terrace houses were demolished and replaced with commercial buildings and warehouses.

Brown Bear Lane stairs (or Little Essex Street) leading to George Street can be seen in the lower left of the image.
