The mural “Duality” was created by the artistic duo Projekt Etnograff — Katarzyna “Katka” Dyga-Szymonowicz and Maciej “Kamer” Szymonowicz. Originally painted in 2014 as “Shepherd,” the mural was inspired by a photograph by Arkadiusz Dziczek taken in the Himalayas, depicting a shepherd holding a newborn lamb too weak to keep up with the flock.
In 2022, to celebrate Bielsko-Biała Days, the artists expanded the composition by adding a female figure. The mural now features not only photorealistic figures but also elements of folk cutouts and lunar symbols. These motifs evoke traditional folk art while highlighting the contrast and balance in human relationships, emphasizing the importance of social bonds, tradition, and harmony.
Projekt Etnograff is known for its deep connection to Beskid folklore and has been blending folk culture with modern graffiti and street art for years. As part of the Beskid Murals Trail, an initiative they launched in 2019, the duo has created numerous murals across Beskid villages, each reflecting local characters, symbols, and legends.
The “Duality” mural is part of the “oBBraz miasta #8” project, organized by Bielska Gallery BWA and the Bielska Gallery Foundation. Its creation was supported by Movincar Polska Sp. z o.o. and Castorama Bielsko-Biała.
