Description

The artistic design is closely tied to a tragic local event. In July 1997, a landlord intentionally caused a gas explosion that destroyed neighboring house No. 8 to evict tenants. In memory of the victims and as a protest against real estate speculation, the owner of houses 12–20, Hans-Rainer Jonas, later initiated the redesign.

Heavily inspired by the organic shapes, curves, and vibrant colors of Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, bright lines and intricate mosaic elements flow across the exterior. The owner originally tried to enlist Hundertwasser himself before his passing, but later chose to implement the style independently.

Today, the buildings serve as a striking, kaleidoscopic landmark in the neighborhood. Since 2019, the property has been owned by the Swiss non-profit Edith Maryon Foundation, which secures the complex for long-term affordable housing and community self-management.

Andrea Ranke (streetartwalks)
In 2013 I started with a new hobby. In the beginning it was difficult to get reliable information how to find streetart in public space. In 2016, I had the idea of sharing my information with other street art enthusiasts and started my blog “Streetartwalks”. When I found out about this new street art community at the beginning of 2018, I was immediately on board.
