This design was originally created using a linoleum print technique, a skill that Maarten excels in like no other. Maarten is part of the collective Galerie Atelier Herenplaats, known worldwide for its work with individuals who have intellectual disabilities (classified as Outsider Art). In addition to his mastery of the lithography technique, Maarten also shows his ability as a painter and graphic artist.
Typically, his illustrations portray everyday scenes, often featuring himself as the central character in a variety of situations. He often injects a touch of fantasy into his work, much like in this particular piece. His designs are characterized by their simplicity, employing black outlines and occasional blackwork in select areas. The themes within his artworks take a lighthearted and comical approach to the psychiatric world/human mind. He portrayed a man holding a giraffe's neck, symbolizing the overview a giraffe has, which is something Maarten would like to have.
