Anunciação

Description

Anunciação offers a new perspective on the work and legacy of Brazilian painter Victor Meirelles.

The mural connects different moments in time through fragments of his work. Indigenous figures from The First Mass in Brazil (1500) turn away from the Mass and toward View of Desterro (1859), contemplating the future produced by colonization. That timeline continues into 2026, with the same churches from Meirelles’ landscape now nearly swallowed by the contemporary city.

Other elements highlight the importance of study and daily practice in Meirelles’ work: a figure from his Studies of Italian Costume, excerpts from Pero Vaz de Caminha’s letter, and a simple study of hands.

Through these overlaps, the mural connects 1500, 1859 and 2026, revisiting images that became part of Brazil’s visual memory.
