Van realisme tot jugendstil

In the central reservation of Avenue Concordia, at the junction with Lusthofstraat, there is an electricity substation painted with the artwork ‘From Realism to Art Nouveau’ by the Rotterdam-based artist Vera Harmsen.

On one of the four sides, flowers can be seen that eventually take on an Art Nouveau form – a reference to the style in which many of the houses on this street were built. On the other three sides, details of the neighbourhood’s houses can be spotted, often included at the request of local residents whilst the artist was working on the painting.

Incendiary bombs fell on this spot during the Second World War. With this mural, the artist has sought to bring the atmosphere of the neighbourhood, with its buildings dating from around 1900, back to life.

Vera Harmsen is a visual artist from Rotterdam who has created many works of art in public spaces.

In de middenberm van de Avenue Concordia bij de kruising met de Lusthofstraat bevindt zicht een elektriciteitshuisje dat is beschilderd met het kunstwerk ‘Van realisme tot jugendstil’ door de Rotterdamse kunstenaar Vera Harmsen.

Aan een van de vier zijdes zijn bloemen te zien die uiteindelijk een Jugendstil vorm aannemen – een verwijzing naar de stijl waarin veel huizen in deze straat zijn gebouwd. Aan de andere drie zijden zijn details te ontdekken van de huizen uit de buurt, vaak opgenomen op verzoek van de omwonenden terwijl de kunstenares bezig was met de schildering.

Op deze plek vielen in WOII brandbommen. Met deze schildering heeft de kunstenares de sfeer van de buurt met gebouwen uit de periode rond 1900, weer tot leven willen wekken.

Vera Harmsen is een beeldend kunstenaar uit Rotterdam die veel kunstwerken in de openbare ruimte heeft gemaakt.
