"Portraits of Northcote celebrates the people, places, stories & history that makes Northcote rise the amazing place it is today.
As five generations of my family have lived on or near Northcote High Street, this was a particularly personal project.
My Nan lived above a greengrocer on High Street during the Depression and my grandfather lived nearby. Both of them would have walked past this lamppost countless times.
The lamppost stands outside Yuni’s Kitchen, a longstanding Indonesian restaurant and much-loved local gem! So for this project, I created The Gathering Light , featuring both Australian & Indonesian moth species.
Like moths drawn to light, locals have been gathering here for more than 150 years. Bringing different backgrounds, cultures and histories with them. For me this speaks to the way communities are formed, through shared experiences rather than shared origins.
This is an old lamppost, with a new layer of Northcote’s story, and I like to imagine, it holds a small connection between Nan’s Northcote and mine."
