rimbeert is Reynaert’s cousin. When Reynaert is accused at court, Grimbeert is the one who defends him. At first glance, Grimbeert may seem like a naïve character, but in the Middle Ages, family bonds were sacred, and it was customary for family members to stand up for one another.

In the story of Reynaert, Grimbeert is the only character who remains untouched by the fox’s cunning tricks.

The name Grimbeert is of Germanic origin and consists of two parts: "Grim," which can mean bitter/angry or mask/helmet, and "bert," meaning bright, shining, or radiant.

In this portrait, Reynaert himself is nowhere to be seen, but his traces are unmistakably present.

This painted utility box was created by the art duo Klapross, consisting of Ellen De Vos and Lut Vandebos.
