The Island of Life

A mural titled “The Island of Life” by local artist Remigijus Januškevičius now adorns the wall of the maternity ward at Jonava Hospital. The artwork was brought to life on the building’s exterior by an experienced street art team from Kaunas – Arminas Raugevičius and Karolis Grubis – who represent the creative studio Gyva Grafika.

The choice of Jonava native R. Januškevičius as the author of the project was no coincidence – his works are known for their warmth, positive emotions, and uplifting mood.

“This commission is very special to me because the client is the entire city of Jonava. I hope the residents will like it,” said Remigijus, explaining that the two trees depicted in the mural symbolise the masculine and feminine aspects. Intertwined, they grow together on the island of life. At the tops of the trees, babies are born and passed down from the hands of medical professionals to the happy parents waiting below.

“The work wasn’t easy, because as you can see, the painting contains a lot of intricate details. We put our hearts into it, and the result speaks for itself,” said one of the project’s artists, Arminas Raugevičius.

“It's rare that we get to work on such detailed paintings. This piece features a modern, poster-like graphic style, which made it challenging but very interesting to execute,” added fellow artist Karolis Grubis.

To transfer the image onto the wall, the artists used special projectors that allowed for precise replication of the original artwork. They also used durable, high-quality paints to ensure the mural remains vibrant for as long as possible.
