The mural depicts a truncated section of verses 503 to 507 from page 25 of Book 5, which belongs to the second part of the Chronicle in verse of Holland:

De grave van Cleve trac in de Haghe.

Tote hem quamen alle daghe

Hare vriende ende hare maghe,

De ons deden grote plaghe,

Ende aten ende dronken sgraven spise.

These verses in Middle Dutch tell the story of the Count of Cleves, who travelled to The Hague, where he was visited every day by friends and relatives who were a burden to him and who ate and drank at his expense.

The Chronicle in Verse of Holland, as it has come down to us, was compiled in several successive stages. Between 1280 and 1282, an anonymous author, employed at the court of Count Floris V, wrote a chronicle in verse recounting the earliest history of Holland up to 1205. In 1301–1302, and then in 1305 or shortly afterwards, Melis Stoke, a clerk to Counts John II and William III, wrote a sequel to this first chronicle, in which he gives a vivid and passionate account of the events that had taken place since 1205.

The mural also shows part of Melis Stoke’s hands, holding a quill and an inkwell that has been knocked over. It is located at the junction of Melis Stokelaan and Beresteinlaan.
