Wilting Flowers

Description

Wilting Flowers is a six-metre-high neon sculpture by Belgian artist Daan Gielis, inspired by a three-colour silkscreen print based on the botanical woodcuts in Antwerp's Plantin-Moretus Museum. Growing up surrounded by plants, his mother was a florist and his father a landscape architect, Gielis developed a lifelong fascination with their beauty and impermanence.

The wilting flowers found in the museum's collection became a powerful metaphor for forgotten histories: stories that, like flowers, have a brief existence before fading from memory. This work continues Gielis' recurring exploration of flowers and plants as bodies suspended between two worlds, life and death, growth and decay.

Resembling a childlike, almost cartoonish flower drawing, the glowing neon becomes a universal symbol. Wherever it is installed, its light enters into a dialogue with its surroundings, subtly transforming the space while inviting reflection on the intertwined opposites it represents: nature and culture, melancholy and innocent joy, presence and absence.

Following Daan Gielis' passing in May 2023, Wilting Flowers stands as a poignant reminder of both the fragility of life and the enduring power of art to keep memories alive.

Hunter

Tiny Tim
Started out hunting the streets in Antwerp, and completely bitten by the 'street art' virus. And the only cure is: HUNT SOME MORE. I love showing people all the amazing Belgian artists, run street art tours in my city and occasionally facilitate new mural projects. I love to travel and meet other hunters and artists. So hit me up when you're in town.
