Sterker door strijd

At 181 Boomgaardsstraat is the mural ‘Stronger through struggle’ by the artist Navin Thakoer, who works under the pseudonym NaferLovesYou, dating from September 2007.

The title refers to the motto of the city of Rotterdam: ‘Stronger through struggle’. The Rotterdam-based artist Thakoer is known for his powerful visual language and striking colours. He combines elements of street art, pop art and graphic design. Here, the realistic gorilla and the female figure wearing a headscarf create a striking contrast between nature and culture, whilst the graphic, maze-like map in between appears to symbolise city life, which stands in sharp contrast to the wild, colourful surroundings above.
