LOVE CATRINA

Description

Collective intervention for the San Antonio Festival 2025, in the outside walls of Fescinal

This artwork, by Don Iwana Don, features a Chola wearing a sugar skull makeup, with red patterns around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead, mimicking a skull, in a love welcoming pose. The painting uses bold cartoon aestheics with heavy linework, prominent hoop earrings, and red ink body art covering her shoulder and chest

The color palette used comprises primarily shades of red, white, black, and blue-grey against the dark wooden background.

This piece shows the blend of traditional Catrina Mexican Art with the Chicano style, where women of Mexican origins from the the South West United States are often represented in a stererotyped way (Cholas)
