Saracen Street Mural

Description

Painted around 1990 this is one of, if not the oldest Gable End Murals in Glasgow. The artist is unknown to me.

The Saracen Street Mural depicted the history and industry of Possilpark, specifically the Saracen Foundry. The mural was painted on an exposed gable wall facing Saracen Cross. It featured elements like the foundry's gatehouse, a bandstand, the Astoria Cinema, a hawthorn tree, a Saracen warrior, a fairground ride horse, and a tramcar. The mural also included a foundry worker and the text "Possilpark 1890-1990".

The mural was later obscured by a new tenement building, and has deteriorated through time, as is to be expected.
