The Blake Mosaics

This public art installation consists of 10 intricately hand-crafted mosaic panels permanently mounted along the pedestrian footbridge at Surbiton Station.

The collection is completely inspired by the visionary English poet and painter William Blake. Each mosaic visually interprets a poem from his famous 1789 illustrated collection, Songs of Innocence and of Experience.

These panels are part of a larger, world-renowned collection of 70 mosaics originally built in the early 2000s by the collective Southbank Mosaics to celebrate the decade Blake spent living in Lambeth. After spending years in the damp railway arches near London Waterloo station, these 10 select panels were rescued and painstakingly hand-restored by artist Jo Lewis (Artist in Residence at RHACC). They were brought to Surbiton as a permanent open-air gallery courtesy of the Surbiton Art Trail, Network Rail, and South Western Railway.
