Another Look at Europe

Description

From the Instagram of Apaiz:

Mural created with the participation of students and the support of the teaching staff of the Collège Vauban International, as part of the Europe Day 2025. Entitled “Another Look at Europe,” the mural depicts two children building a wooden cabin while a third approaches to take shelter inside it. The scene symbolizes a Europe that protects, but is also fragile. The children represent hope, solidarity, and the future of a union built together by everyone.

At the top of the cabin, a flame can be seen, representing conflicts, wars, and current crises such as climate change. This image recalls the well-known quote by Jacques Chirac: “Our house is burning, and we are looking the other way.” The mural also references The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, evoking the stars of the European flag.

The map of Europe appears upside down, in relation to the projections used by James Gall and Arno Peters. This choice invites viewers to reflect on how maps can influence the way we see the world and encourages us to question representations we often take for granted. Turning the map upside down thus becomes a way of reflecting on our own worldview.

Ultimately, the artwork encourages us to look at Europe through different eyes and to adopt a more critical, conscious, and supportive attitude.
