The Battle of São Mamede

On 24 June 1128 mother and son, D. Teresa and D. Afonso Henriques, stood here on opposite sides in the battle of São Mamede. This battle marked the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal and the beginning of Portugal's independence.

Ana Monteiro (PT, 1990) made this artworks during the artistic residence in Guimarães, within the scope of the Programme of Artistic Interventions and Community “NO MINHO NÃO HÁ ALDEIA MELHOR DO QUE A MINHA!” (In Minho, there is no village better than mine!).

This project is promoted by the MINHO IN consortium that integrates the 24 municipalities of Minho and is curated by Helena Mendes Pereira.
