The community of the town of Sisal invited us to paint to help raise awareness about how important it is to preserve nature.
They told us how a few years ago, the sea cucumber fishing for the Asian market began. And as in 5 years this resource is over. Unfortunately, the sea cucumber has a very important role in the ecosystem and without filtering the water, the fish disappeared.
Today, fishing in Sisal is much more difficult: they have to travel 8 hours in their boats to reach the fishing points. They get into debt, risk the weather or face pirate attacks.
Now they face another challenge: real estate pressure, and unbridled tourism development.
The Sisal community rose up not to be a "Magic Town" and sought to have indigenous people's authority to have more weapons when facing predatory investors looking for the rapid benefit of devastating mass tourism.
A tourism without control or education consumes the place, fills the mangrove that is the basis of all Caribbean life to build hotels, attracts violence, and the money ends quickly in the hands of little leaving the many others in critical situations, scares the fauna and consumes in a breath what was a paradise
However, there are ways to guide towards a sustainable and scientific community tourism to live and protect from wetlands and all the fauna that lives from them
Art and education are essential to protect peoples and animals from blind capitalism.
Because taking care of nature is taking care of a
Stable and long-term economy for natives.
