Street Art Cities

Four flats have been created above the shop in the striking building on the corner of Heuvelstraat/Alexanderstraat, along with the neighbouring properties. The buildings originally all belonged to the Van Nunen-Boes family. Part of the complex housed the department store, whilst the family lived in the adjacent building at Alexanderstraat 2. Here, artist Ivo van Leeuwen created artworks on the windows. They are references to the Van Nunen-Boes family and the toys that were sold there.

This listed building was designed by architect Frans de Beer and was built in 1924 as a department store and toy shop. The beautiful stained-glass windows bearing the inscription ‘J.J. van Nunen-Boes’ and the word ‘Speelgoederen’ on the façade still serve as a reminder of the renowned shop. To many residents of Tilburg, the building is known as Bart Smit (since 1981) and later as Intertoys, which moved out in 2018. It is now home to JD Sports.
The property is owned by the Blokker family, the well-known retail dynasty. They own properties throughout the country and are currently renovating them in several locations and creating residential accommodation, from Groningen to Breda and Maastricht. In many cases, these properties are listed buildings.

Bij het markante hoekpand Heuvelstraat/Alexanderstraat plus buurpanden zijn boven de winkel 4 appartementen gerealiseerd. De panden waren oorspronkelijk allemaal van de familie Van Nunen-Boes. Een deel was het warenhuis en in het aangrenzende pand, Alexanderstraat 2, woonden ze. Hier bracht kunstenaar Ivo van Leeuwen kunst aan op de ramen. Het zijn verwijzingen naar de familie Van Nunen-Boes en het speelgoed dat je er vroeger vond.

Het rijksmonument is ontworpen door architect Frans de Beer en werd in 1924 gebouwd als warenhuis annex speelgoedzaak. De prachtige glas-in-loodramen met de tekst ‘J.J. van Nunen-Boes’ en de geveltekst ‘Speelgoederen’ op de muur herinneren nog aan de vermaarde winkel. Voor veel Tilburgers is het pand bekend als de Bart Smit (sinds 1981) en later de Intertoys, die in 2018 vertrok. Nu zit JD Sports erin.
Eigenaar van het pand is de familie Blokker, de bekende winkelfamilie. Zij hebben vastgoed door het hele land en zijn die op meerdere plekken aan het opknappen en woonruimte aan het scheppen, van Groningen tot Breda en Maastricht. Daarbij gaat het in veel gevallen om rijksmonumenten.
