Description

The PLANEO project (Andalusian Linguistic Landscape: Evaluation and Cartographic Observation) aims to study aspects of Andalusian multilingualism based on the verbal traces that speakers leave in public spaces, that is, through the analysis of signs of the linguistic landscape (advertising, institutional, and protest signage). It begins with corpus work in which signs of the linguistic landscape from various Andalusian urban environments, focusing on four of the eight provinces, will be photographed and stored in a database. Secondly, the project includes an observation phase of aspects of geosociolinguistic interest, such as the relationship within the linguistic landscape between signs produced by entities and signs produced by individuals, the potential imbalance between the demographic weight of a group and its presence in the official linguistic landscape, and how non-common languages are grouped in cities. The project's ultimate goals are the design of a public consultation tool on the European linguistic landscape, useful for a multidisciplinary sector of scholars (anthropologists, sociologists, geographers) and social actors, and the drafting of two types of proposals for the institutional management of multilingualism in contemporary European societies: a linguistic capital profile and a landscape planning report template. The project would have an impact on the design of new language management strategies for the development of smart cities and on the implementation of socio-educational measures to regulate and guide public government signage.
