“Wände Südost” is one of the largest and best-known urban art projects in Essen. In the summer of 2012, a total of 21 local, national, and international artists transformed dreary urban spaces in Essen’s Südostviertel into a huge, free open-air art promenade. The densely built-up neighborhood is bisected by the heavily trafficked A40 highway. To make this “urban planning problem child” more inviting, the project was organized on a volunteer basis by the core team centered around the Storp9 Community Center. The artworks are primarily concentrated on the streets that run parallel to or cross the highway. These include Von-der-Tann-Straße and Metzer Straße.
