On the roller shutter at 87 Teilingerstraat, there is a mural by Top Cats / Studio TopCat.
Ralph van Horssen is the Rotterdam-based artist and self-styled ‘street storyteller’ who works under the name Studio TopCat (formerly TopCat Design, as this piece is still signed). His fascination with cartoons – which began as a child with his father’s collection of comic books – is clearly evident in his work. His art is recognisable by its old-school cartoon-like figures, rendered in thick lines and bright colours, with a graffiti-like feel.
In the background of this artwork, the Rotterdam skyline is clearly visible, featuring the Euromast and the Erasmus Bridge. In the foreground stands a graffiti artist, spray can in hand and a look of surprise in his eyes. It could well be the artist himself.
