Hermanus "Herman" Brood (1946 – 2001) was a Dutch musician, painter, actor and poet. As a musician he achieved artistic and commercial success in the 1970s and 1980s, and was called "the greatest and only Dutch rock 'n' roll star". Later in life he started a successful career as a painter. Known for his hedonistic lifestyle of "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll", Brood was an enfant terrible and a cultural figure. On 11 July 2001, depressed by the failure of his drug rehabilitation program and facing serious medical problems because of his prolonged drug use, he committed suicide by jumping from the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel at the age of 54. He left a note, stating "Party on. I'll be seeing you."
This portrait of former Zwolle resident Herman Brood is painted on a panel in front of the scaffolding around the church Grote Kerk, which is currently being restored. Spaanstra painted the portrait based on a photo by Eva Depoorter. Spaanstra's work can be viewed as long as the scaffolding around the church is in place. After that time, it may probably be on display in the Herman Brood Museum.
Donovan Spaanstra (Zwolle, 1971) generally draws his inspiration from the old masters, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt van Rijn, Caravaggio and Michelangelo. He says: 'I translate classic art with the modern medium of the spray can". In the media Spaanstra is also called Rembrandt with an aerosol.
