Deze kleurrijke afbeelding op de muur van buurthuis Rijnhuizen is ontworpen door Margriet Osinga, een illustrator uit Utrecht. In haar werk laat Margriet een kleurrijk palet zien. Ze maakt het liefst illustraties met geometrische composities en grafische patronen.

De schildering is uitgevoerd door de Utrechtse illustrator en straatkunstenaar MRKubus. Hij is de maker van ‘The Friendly Hero’, die je zomaar in het wild in Utrecht kunt tegenkomen.

Voorzitter Herman Hendriks van Wijkplatform Rijnhuizen is betrokken geweest bij de totstandkoming van het kunstwerk. Hij vertelde dat er aanvankelijk alleen kantoorgebouwen in deze buurt stonden, maar dat de wijk inmiddels verandert in een grote woonwijk. Een buurthuis is daar zeker op zijn plaats. Het buurthuis is momenteel nog gevestigd in de voormalige kantine van een hockeyvereniging aan de rand van de wijk. Over ongeveer drie jaar zal het verhuizen naar een nieuwe, meer centrale locatie tussen de woningen.

Met de schildering wil men het buurthuis meer onder de aandacht van de buurtbewoners brengen.

Op de schildering zijn verschillende mensen te zien die samenkomen, met elkaar praten, eten en drinken. Dit thema sluit goed aan bij de functie van een buurthuis.

Tijdens mijn bezoek aan het buurthuis wees men mij op nog twee muurschilderingen. Beide zijn gemaakt door vrijwilligster Joke de Koning en uitgevoerd in dezelfde stijl als het ontwerp van Margriet Osinga. Zowel de schildering op een buitendeur als die op een muur in het trappenhuis zijn bij de afbeeldingen te zien.

Ook is een foto toegevoegd van een van de twee plantenbakken die MRKubus van zijn vrolijke Friendly Hero heeft voorzien. De plantenbakken worden momenteel ingericht en krijgen binnenkort een mooi plaatsje.

De schildering is in september 2025 gemaakt, maar begint op sommige plekken wat te schilferen. Tijdens mijn gesprek met Herman Hendriks gaf ik aan dat de tijdelijke locatie van het buurthuis, en daarmee waarschijnlijk ook de tijdelijke aard van de muurschildering, wellicht de reden was om geen coating aan te brengen. Dat bleek echter niet het geval te zijn: er is wel degelijk een coating aangebracht. De schildering is in de afgelopen periode bovendien een keer opgeknapt.

This colourful image on the wall of the Rijnhuizen community centre was designed by Margriet Osinga, an illustrator from Utrecht. Her work features a colourful palette, and she particularly enjoys creating illustrations with geometric compositions and graphic patterns.

The mural was painted by Utrecht-based illustrator and street artist MRKubus. He is the creator of ‘The Friendly Hero’, which you may come across unexpectedly in the streets of Utrecht.

Herman Hendriks, chairman of the Rijnhuizen Neighbourhood Platform, was involved in the creation of the artwork. He explained that initially there were only office buildings in this area, but that the neighbourhood is now being transformed into a large residential district. A community centre certainly has a place here. For the time being, the community centre is still located in the former clubhouse of a hockey club on the edge of the neighbourhood. In about three years, it will move to a new, more central location among the homes.

The mural is intended to draw more attention to the community centre among local residents.

The mural depicts various people coming together, talking, eating and drinking. This theme fits perfectly with the function of a community centre.

During my visit to the community centre, I was also shown two other murals. Both were created by volunteer Joke de Koning and are in the same style as Margriet Osinga’s design. Both the painting on an exterior door and the one on a wall in the stairwell can be seen in the accompanying images.

A photo has also been included of one of the two planters that MRKubus has decorated with his cheerful Friendly Hero. The planters are currently being prepared and will soon be given a nice place.

The mural was painted in September 2025, but in some places the paint has already started to flake. During my conversation with Herman Hendriks, I suggested that the temporary location of the community centre, and therefore probably also the temporary nature of the mural, might have been the reason why no protective coating had been applied. However, this turned out not to be the case: a coating had indeed been applied. The mural has also been refurbished once in recent months.
