The brick-and-stone building that houses Metropolitan Lumber & Hardware was built c. 1885 as an electrical substation for the Metropolitan Railway Company, which ran the 6th Avenue El. The facade features a colorful carpentry-themed mural, commissioned by the Gem Lumber Company, a former occupant. The iconic mural at 175 Spring dates back to 1963.
