The Fruit of Connection / De Vrucht van Verbinding

De Vrucht van Verbinding (The Fruit of Connection) covers the end wall of the apartment block at Wilhelminastraat 1, one of the main roads into Uden. Rotterdam muralist Tymon de Laat, who has family roots in the area, completed it in early September 2026 on commission from housing corporation Area.

The design came out of a session with residents of the Flatwijk, a neighbourhood where many cultures live side by side. Children drew their ideas for the wall, adults shared stories and memories of the area.

The mural shows a girl of Dutch and Korean descent holding a basket of cherries and cherry blossom. Uden and Korea both have a long tradition around the cherry. The artist used that shared tradition to show how much people on opposite sides of the world have in common. Inside the basket sit Peerke Verschiet, Uden's local folk figure, and the Sint-Petruskerk. A giant painting of Peerke filled this same wall before, and residents asked for him to return. Behind the girl lies the landscape of Bedaf with a farmer, a reference to Uden's farming history.

The style is typical De Laat: a portrait with exaggerated facial lines, filled in with vivid colour, rooted in a year of travelling through Latin America.
