In 2016 preliminary designs were completed for a proposed change of the U.S. $20 bill from a portrait of Andrew Jackson to former slave Harriet Tubman, revered for her work help others enslaved escape through the Underground Railroad. The following year, in a New Orleans in the process of taking down monuments representing white oppression, local transplant artist and muralist Henry Lipkis lent his support to the effort to “make room to honor those Americans who truly fought for freedom.” Lipkis, with the help of another transplant, Devin Reynolds, replaced a series of controversial murals on St Claude Ave at Marigny St with this celebration of Tubman and the proposed $20 bill. Since they painted this, perhaps unsurprisingly, the current administration has put the project on hold. @henrylipkis/ @devinreynolds_/
