NEDERLANDS - Naar aanleiding van de festiviteiten rond 200 jaar Portaels, vroeg de stad Vilvoorde begin 2018 aan Vilvoordenaar Wide Vercnocke om een muurschildering te realiseren. Vercnocke, geboren in Leuven in 1985 en afgestudeerd als illustrator aan Sint-Lukas Brussel, koos voor een interessante hommage. Alhoewel de tekening op het eerste zicht vrij sober lijkt, is het geen vrijblijvend werk geworden. De verwijzingen naar Portaels zijn legio. Om te beginnen is er de dag van inhuldiging: 30 april 2018. Dit is geen willekeurig gekozen datum. Tweehonderd jaar geleden, op 30 april 1818 om één uur in de namiddag, werd Jean Portaels geboren in Vilvoorde. Ook de locatie van het kunstwerk is welbewust gekozen. Naast de Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Goede Hoopkerk lag vroeger brouwerij “De Sterre” van vader Portaels. Net op die plek werd Portaels geboren en bracht hij daar zijn jeugd door. De zwarte ster bovenaan de tekening, verwijst trouwens naar de brouwerij in kwestie. Het grootste deel van de tekening wordt ingenomen door twee mannen; beiden stellen Jean Portaels voor. De jonge man die in oostelijke richting stapt, is klaar om de wijde wereld in te trekken. In zijn linkerhand houdt hij een quasi onbeschreven blad vast. Klaar om impressies op te doen. Klaar om geïnspireerd te worden. Klaar om zijn talent te ontwikkelen. Zo bezoekt hij o.a. Frankrijk, Italië, Hongarije en Griekenland. Stiekem - zijn familie weet van niets - trekt Portaels de Middellandse zee over. Als een van de eerste Belgische schilders reist hij naar Syrië, Palestina, Egypte, Marokko, Algerije, Libanon, enz. Geen evidentie in het begin van de 19de eeuw. De figuur op de achtergrond die in westelijke richting stapt, komt terug naar huis. Zoveel ervaringen rijker. Op zijn rug: een goedgevulde rugzak vol met duizenden schetsen die als basis zullen dienen voor zijn schilderijen die hij later in zijn ateliers zou realiseren. Het tafereel van beide mannen wordt omsloten door een driehoek. Ook geen toeval uiteraard. Hierbij liet Wide Vercnocke zich inspireren door de Sint-Jacob-op-Koudenberg, de kerk aan het Koningsplein in Brussel (met vooraan het standbeeld van Godfried van Bouillon). Het fronton - boven een Romeins aandoende zuilengalerij - is versierd met een fresco van de hand van Jean Portaels. Het zou “Maria, troosteres der verdrukten” uitbeelden. Ook in de kerk zelf hangen twee schilderijen van Portaels. Naast de Street art tekening werd Wide Vercnocke ook gevraagd om de etiketten op het speciaal gedenkbier “200 jaar Portaels” te illustreren (limited edition). Verder verzorgde hij de illustraties voor de uitgave “Portaels, Vilvoordenaar en wereldburger” van auteurs Davy Depelchin en Jona Broothaerts. Tenslotte werkte hij mee aan de tentoonstelling “200 jaar Portaels” die plaatsvond in het Tuchthuis van 19 mei t.e.m. 1 juli 2018.   

ENGLISH - On the occasion of the festivities around 200 years of Portaels (a well-known painter), the city of Vilvoorde asked Wide Vercnocke to create a mural in early 2018. Vercnocke, born in Leuven in 1985 and graduated as an illustrator from Sint-Lukas Brussels, chose an interesting homage. Although at first sight the drawing seems rather sober, it has not become a noncommittal work. References to Portaels are numerous. To begin with, there is the day of inauguration: 30 April 2018. This is not a randomly chosen date. Two hundred years ago, on 30 April 1818 at one o'clock in the afternoon, Jean Portaels was born in Vilvoorde. The location of the work of art was also deliberately chosen. Next to the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Goede Hoopkerk (Church of Our Lady of Good Hope) used to be a brewery "The Star", owned by father Portaels. Portaels was born just on that spot and spent his youth there. The black star at the top of the drawing refers to the brewery in question. The largest part of the drawing is occupied by two men; both represent Jean Portaels. The young man stepping eastwards is ready to go out into the wide world. In his left hand he is holding an almost blank canvas. Ready to make impressions. Ready to be inspired. Ready to develop his talent. For example, he visits France, Italy, Hungary and Greece. Secretly - his family doesn't know anything - Portaels crosses the Mediterranean. As one of the first Belgian painters, he travels to Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Lebanon, and so on. This was not evident at the beginning of the 19th century. The figure in the background stepping westwards returns home. So many experiences richer. On his back: a well-filled backpack full of thousands of sketches that will serve as the basis for his paintings that he would later realize in his studios. The scene of both men is enclosed by a triangle. Not a coincidence, of course. Wide Vercnocke was inspired by the Saint-Jacob-op-Koudenberg, the church on Place Royale in Brussels (with the statue of Godfrey of Bouillon in front). The pediment - above a Roman-style colonnade - is decorated with a fresco by Jean Portaels. It would depict "Mary, Comforter of the oppressed". Two paintings by Portaels also hang in the church itself. In addition to the Street art drawing, Wide Vercnocke was also asked to illustrate the labels on the special memorial beer "200 years of Portaels" (limited edition). Furthermore he provided the illustrations for the book "Portaels, citizen of Vilvoorde and world citizen" by authors Davy Depelchin and Jona Broothaerts. Finally, he contributed to the exhibition "200 Years of Portaels" which took place in the Tuchthuis from 19 May to 1 July 2018.
