Conrad

A small pixel mosaic by the French street artist m_e_g_a_m_a_t_t is embedded in a weathered wall on Rue Armand-Carrel. Measuring only a few centimetres, the work depicts Conrad B. Hart, the protagonist of the 1992 science-fiction computer game Flashback. His brown hair and upper clothing, blue trousers and white shoes are characteristic elements of the figure.

m_e_g_a_m_a_t_t is one of the French artists who transfer the visual language of classic pixel art into the urban environment. According to the artist, he began making mosaics around 2008. His earliest works featured characters from Mega Man, before he turned to Conrad and developed an extensive series around the character. He has explained that Conrad was particularly well suited to his idea of playing with the street and placing the figure in different situations.

The work photographed here shows a relatively simple, upright version of Conrad. As with many of m_e_g_a_m_a_t_t's pieces, the tiny, brightly coloured pixel figure contrasts strongly with the large, weathered architectural surface surrounding it.
