In the pedestrian tunnel on Frederikstraat stands the artwork ‘Tropical Surprise’, created in 2011 by Arno Coenen.
Measuring 12.5 by 2.7 metres, the artwork is composed of 5 by 5-centimetre mosaic tiles. The design is based on the imagery found on pinball machines from the 1980s. It is intended not only as a nod to those old games, but also to the multicultural atmosphere of this Rotterdam neighbourhood.
Arno Coenen, a visual artist from Dordrecht, studied media art and computer graphics. In his work, he combines digital media and pop culture with traditional physical craftsmanship. One of his famous works is the Horn of Plenty in Rotterdam’s Markthal.
