Created in 2013 as part of his ‘Larger-Than-Life’ project in which he recreated classical pieces in an effort to help address the negative stereotypes that persist around street-art and graffiti.
Pietà was the third mural of a collection of four which Owen Dippie completed as part of the Larger-Than-Life project, commissioned by Priority One. It is a spray-painted replica of the Madonna’s face in Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo’s sculpture, Pietà.
Not only is Michelangelo Owen Dippie's favourite artist, but he says he recreates these pieces to help address negative stereotypes that persist around street-art and graffiti,
“I hate the fact that spray paint is seen as such a negative material or medium… all it is to me is painting with the push of a button instead of the stroke of a brush.”
The other three pieces in this series include:
Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam, 2013 (which is just around the corner on the other side of the carpark building)
Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with the Pearl Earring, 2013,(Cameron Road) - this one may not exist anymore.
Girl with a Pearl Earing - 219 Cameron Road
