Drie vlinders (Three butterflies)

Description

Carin Sleurink lives in Nieuwegein and has created several beautiful and cheerful murals there.
She always paints her murals together with local residents, and this mural of three butterflies was created in the same way.

The neighborhood where this mural is located is called the Rijtuigenbuurt (Carriages District). The painting shows three butterflies among blossoming branches. In the butterflies’ wings, references to carriages—such as wheels and reins—have been incorporated, reflecting the street names in the Rijtuigenbuurt (see detail).

My passion for murals began in 2019. I read a newspaper article about Jan is de Man, who had created a mural in Utrecht. It depicted a bookcase (on Mimosastraat). Local residents had been asked what their favorite book was and whether he could include it on the bookshelf. After my retirement, I started organizing cycling tours past twenty beautiful, large murals in Utrecht, and more recently also in Nieuwegein. It’s great fun to do!
