Op het Terloplein in Borgerhout kwamen er dankzij Walls of BoHo niet één, maar twee nieuwe kunstwerken bij. Eén daarvan is van de hand van de 29-jarige Zahra Eljadid, illustratrice en kunstenares uit de wijk. Voor haar betekende dit project meteen de grootste muur die ze ooit onder handen nam, een uitdaging die ze met een strak draaiboek en veel structuur te lijf ging.

Op haar schildering spelen drie kinderen vrolijk in de regen, een tafereel dat vanzelf een glimlach oproept. De inspiratie haalde Zahra uit haar eigen jeugdherinneringen: “Als kind trok ik net naar buiten wanneer het regende. Met rolschaatsen op nat asfalt ging je extra snel.”

De mural sluit perfect aan bij het plein, een plek die volgens Zahra wel wat hoop en inspiratie kan gebruiken. Terwijl ze werkte, merkte ze hoe kinderen uit de buurt haar met bewondering volgden. “Ik zag mezelf nooit als iemand naar wie ze opkeken, maar dat gevoel kreeg ik hier wel. Ik wil tonen dat tekenen en kunst maken mijn leven is. Ik ben niet enkel die vrouw met een hoofddoek. Nu ik het resultaat zie, voel ik vooral trots.”

Thanks to Walls of BoHo, not one, but two new artworks have been added to Terloplein in Borgerhout. One of them is by 29-year-old Zahra Eljadid, an illustrator and artist from the neighborhood. For her, this project immediately marked the largest wall she has ever tackled, a challenge she tackled with a strict schedule and a strong sense of structure.

In her painting, three children happily play in the rain, a scene that naturally evokes a smile. Zahra drew inspiration from her own childhood memories: "As a child, I would go outside whenever it rained. Roller skating on wet asphalt made you go extra fast."

The mural perfectly complements the square, a place Zahra believes could use some hope and inspiration. As she worked, she noticed how children from the neighborhood followed her with admiration. I never saw myself as someone they looked up to, but I certainly got that feeling here. I want to show that drawing and making art is my life. I'm not just that woman in a headscarf. Now that I see the result, I feel especially proud.
