This is an informal Grenfell memorial outside Ladbroke Grove Underground station. It serves as a reminder of the 72 victims of the terrible block fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017. Paprika Skala-Williams is a local theatre designer and ceramist from West London. She studied theatre design at the renowned Central Saint Martins in London and has lived near Grenfell Tower for many years. During the horrific fire in June 2017, she was living in Dixon House, one of the residential blocks situated right next to Grenfell Tower. She therefore experienced the disaster from a terrifyingly close distance. After the fire, she wanted to help her neighbours come to terms with their immense trauma and grief. She decided to organise free art therapy workshops. Together with the severely affected local community, she began modelling these clay hearts. The monument is therefore not only her own creation, but a community project. Each handmade ceramic heart on the wall symbolises a victim, as well as the love and solidarity within the neighbourhood. It bears the poignant inscription: “Grenfell, so many fell, lives fell, nations fell, hearts fell”.
