Artwork created for Blind Walls Gallery in 2025

"The design centers around a crane bird, not only visually striking due to its lines, but also a symbol of hope, long life, and wisdom. Two flying companions surrounding the central bird represent the often invisible yet essential contributions of volunteers. The surrounding flowers reinforce this theme: the peony symbolizes generosity, violets stand for humility, and the hydrangea for appreciation of commitment and loyalty.
In the background, a yellow circle, interpretable as either the sun or moon, adds a sense of rhythm, energy, and the constant light that volunteers bring. The color palette, featuring shades of yellow, purple/pink, and blue/green, emerged organically and creates a balance between light and dark.

Marloes de Kiewit is a self-taught artist based in Rotterdam. She creates both indoor and outdoor murals, window paintings, (digital) illustrations, paintings, and painted objects for individuals, companies, and organizations.
Her work combines refined linework with colorful, realistic compositions. She enjoys immersing herself in adding endless detail, always seeking the balance between movement and stillness, strength and vulnerability.

The mural is an initiative of the Municipality of Breda and MOOIWERK, as a tribute to the more than 70,000 volunteers who dedicate themselves to the city each year, across roughly 2,000 locations. Their efforts span many domains, including care, sports, culture, festivals, and politics. Caregivers—those supporting family, neighbors, or acquaintances—are also included. Well-known volunteer organizations include De Zonnebloem, Breda Barst, and the Singelloop. Volunteering is often driven by conviction and involvement, not the pursuit of recognition. Still, their contribution is indispensable to the functioning and social character of the city.

MOOIWERK plays a central role in supporting these volunteers and their organizations. They inspire residents of Breda to get involved, advise associations and social organizations, and organize meetings and training sessions for volunteers. The mural symbolizes gratitude to everyone who gives of themselves—for others, for the city, and for their own growth. Muurschildering voor Blind Walls Gallery in 2025

"Deze muurschildering is een eerbetoon aan de meer dan 70.000 vrijwilligers die zich jaarlijks inzetten voor de stad. Het ontwerp draait om een kraanvogel; niet alleen visueel sterk door zijn lijnen, maar ook een symbool voor hoop, een lang leven en wijsheid. Twee vliegende soortgenoten rondom de centrale vogel verwijzen naar de vaak onzichtbare maar onmisbare inzet van vrijwilligers. De omringende bloemen versterken dit thema: de pioenroos staat voor vrijgevigheid, de viooltjes voor nederigheid en de hortensia voor waardering van inzet en trouw.

Marloes de Kiewit is autodidact en woont in Rotterdam. Zij creëert zowel binnen- als buitenmuurschilderingen, raamschilderingen, (digitale) illustraties, schilderijen en beschilderde objecten voor particulieren, bedrijven en organisaties.
Haar werk is een combinatie van verfijnd lijnwerk en kleurrijke, realistische composities. Ze verliest zich graag in het aanbrengen van eindeloos veel details, altijd op zoek naar de balans tussen beweging en stilte, kracht en kwetsbaarheid.

De muurschildering is een initiatief van Gemeente Breda en MOOIWERK als eerbetoon aan alle vrijwilligers die zich elk jaar inzetten voor de stad, op zo’n 2.000 locaties. Hun inzet strekt zich uit over vele domeinen, waaronder zorg, sport, cultuur, festivals en politiek. Ook mantelzorgers — mensen die zich inzetten voor familie, buren of bekenden — worden hierin meegenomen. Bekende vrijwilligersorganisaties zijn onder andere De Zonnebloem, Breda Barst en de Singelloop. Vrijwilligerswerk wordt vaak gedaan vanuit overtuiging en betrokkenheid, niet voor de erkenning. Toch is hun bijdrage onmisbaar voor het functioneren en het sociale karakter van de stad.

MOOIWERK speelt een centrale rol in het ondersteunen van deze vrijwilligers en de organisaties. Ze inspireren Bredanaars om aan de slag te gaan, geven advies aan verenigingen en maatschappelijke organisaties, en organiseren bijeenkomsten en trainingen voor vrijwilligers. De muurschildering symboliseert de dankbaarheid aan iedereen die zich inzet voor een ander, voor de stad en voor zichzelf.
