Orgon, orgon, orgon

On the corner of Thorbeckestraat 12 is the painting ‘Orgon, orgon, orgon’ by the artist Joe Cillen.

At the top of the painting is the inscription ‘On the way to the Sargasso Sea: orgone boxes in the wake of the motor vessel Noordereiland’. According to the psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich, orgone energy is a biological energy, the primal force of all life. The text beneath the parrot reads ‘impulsis piratis restituta eleuthera’, meaning: through piracy we restore freedom.

Joe Cillen is a former skipper and creator of installations and paintings. He has produced several works of art on Noordereiland, all of which form part of his larger project ‘Motorschip Noordereiland’ – he regards Noordereiland as a large motor vessel that could set sail at any moment.
