Bommelaertje is a fictional character created by artist Karen de Bondt.

Hugo de Groot (also known as Grotius) is a well-known figure in Dutch history. The French king calls him "the miracle of Holland." Grotius is a brilliant jurist and lays the foundation for international law. His political enemy, Prince Maurits, imprisons him in Loevestein Castle in 1619. With the help of his wife, Grotius manages to escape in a book chest.
