Thuyndagkinderen / Childhood memories

Henk De Ruddere, alias ENCQ, made a mural in the ABC-straat near the corner with the Rijselstraat in Ypres. ENCQ comes from Ypres, but lives in Brussels. His artwork 'Thuyndagkinderen* mixes the history of Ypres with that of the artist himself. In the background you can see the stylized skyline of the Cat City, so recognizable by the towers of the Cloth Hall and the St. Martin's Cathedral. "Every time I return to Ypres, this is the first image I see of the city, it's a bit like coming home... even though I don't live here anymore", says the artist (63).  "In the foreground you see two children, my brother Frank (60) and me, during the flower procession in the mid-1960s in honor of Our Lady of Thuyne, patron saint of Ypres and in memory of the siege of Ypres in 1383. We both left the Cat City, but the bond remains. Ypres, a city with a long past and traditions, besieged and destroyed and risen like a phoenix from the ashes."

Henk De Ruddere, alias ENCQ, maakte een muurschildering in de ABC-straat nabij de hoek met de Rijselstraat in leper. ENCQ is afkomstig uit Ieper, maar woont in Brussel. Zijn kunstwerk 'Thuyndagkinderen' vermengt de geschiedenis van leper met die van de kunstenaar zelf.
Op de achtergrond zie je de gestileerde skyline van de Kattenstad, zo herkenbaar door de torens van de Lakenhalle en de Sint-Maartenskathedraal. "Elke keer als ik terugkeer naar leper is dit het eerste beeld dat ik van de stad te zien krijg, het is een beetje thuiskomen... al woon ik hier niet meer", vertelt de kunstenaar (63). "Op de voorgrond zie je twee kinderen, mijn broer Frank (60) en ik, tijdens de bloemenprocessie halfweg de jaren 60 ter ere van O.L.V. van Thuyne, patrones van leper en ter nagedachtenis van het beleg van leper in 1383. We verlieten beiden de Kattenstad, maar de band blijft. leper, een stad met een lang verleden en tradities, belegerd en verwoest en als een Feniks uit zijn as herrezen."
