The district's most famous entertainer, internationally acclaimed contralto singer Ada Crossley, portrayed on the Yarram’s Mechanics’ Institute.

On April 14th, 1912, HMS Titanic made its maiden voyage from Southport England to New York. The band onboard famously played ‘Nearer My God To Thee', a song made famous by Ada, as the ship was sinking.

Ada later performed at the Titanic Memorial Concert held at the Royal Albert Hall in 1914.
