A certain Sense of Adventure

A certain sense of adventure is a mural in the historic Martin Hotel for the 2025 Winnemucca Murals & Music festival, curated by Eric Brooks and Michelle Hammond. 

This piece highlights many ways in which women are essential caregivers in their Basque community, as well as the importance of those dedicated to preserving the culture in the diaspora through teaching the language, playing the games, performing the traditional dances, or organizing the annual vibrant Basque Festival. Showcasing women through warm, domestic kitchen scenes remains essential to this community, as it captures the spirit of hospitality and nurturing. Without ignoring examples of how Basque women in Nevada fought to overcome restrictive gender roles. The elements for these depictions were derived from conversations with women from the Basque community in Winnemucca since February 2015.
